For the best experience during your visit, please review the Arboretum Rules.

We are a nonprofit 501(c)(3) privately managed, public garden dedicated to using horticulture as a catalyst for community connection. As a nonprofit, the Arboretum receives NO financial support from tax revenues. Volunteers and private donors make our existence possible. THANK YOU!!

The Arboretum is managed by a volunteer board of directors and employs 2 staff members.
Currently the gardens occupy 6 acres with multiple attractions.

IT’S OFFICIAL!! On March 18, 2024 the NABG acquired the additional ~13.5 acres of cropland to the north! We now have 19.5 acres of green space! The first phase of our expansion began April 9, 2024 when the prairie was seeded. This is just the beginning! We have plans to continue adding amazing beauty, inspiration, discovery, and recreation to the community! DONATE TODAY!! Join us in ‘Growing Beauty Earth Deep’!

Grinnell College has an amazing Intern Program which the NABG is fortunate to use. In 2023 we gained our first Intern, Franny Atmore. It was an amazing experience for our organization (and I hope for Franny!).

This year we have another awesome student from Grinnell College, Ella Widmann! Ella is majoring in Sociology with a focus on Environmental Studies. She is fascinated by the cultural effects of people on their environment.

Ella spent last semester abroad, studying gardens in Denmark & Sweden. She arrived back in the States at the end of May and jumped right into her intern position at the NABG.

Ella will be presenting (2) programs:

PLEASE JOIN US to learn about the gardens of Scandinavia and the history of botanical gardens in America and in Iowa!

Attendance is FREE!

Painted Rock Snake Community Activity

Hello Everyone

My name is Jasper, and I am a county rock snake. I was “born” this June 2023 in Jasper County, Iowa.

I came upon this beautiful Newton Arboretum & Botanical Gardens during my search high and low for a wonderful place for me to live and grow.

While slithering around the plants, flowers, and trees, I realized I had found just the right spot for me, where I could remain outdoors and free.

While I reside here I hope to bring some smiles to visitors and those passing by, so I am asking for your help to make sure I catch their eye.

The more I grow, the more I’ll show. So will you please paint a rock and add it at my end? Then won’t you please also tell a friend?

I thank you for your kindly visit, and all your help if you can lend it.

I would so like if you would stop back by from time to time to visit me as well as see all the flowers, plants, and trees.

Sssssincerely, Jasper.
